Diabetes is a condition in which your body is not able to produce insulin or properly use it. The main purpose behind following a diabetic diet is for maintaining an ideal body weight and to make the blood sugar in your body normal. A diet plan for a diabetic patient is determined on the basis of height, weight, age, sex, physical activity and nature of diabetes. While planning diet, the dietitian need to consider complications like high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.

A diet plan will help you to decide on the type of food to have and the amount of it and the time to eat it. You should select foods that are rich in nutrition and less in calories. A diabetic diet should be rich in fiber so that helps to slow down or reduce the absorptionor release of glucose into the blood stream.
There are certain points that you should keep in mind when you are planning a diabetic diet, they are given below:

  • There should be an intake of at least 1.4 oz fiber in a day
  • Instead of having three heavy meals, you can opt for having food in four to five small mid intervals.
  • Instead of bakery items and fast foods, you should have simple whole cooked cereals, and you should not eat carbohydrates two hours before bedtime.
  • You should have fruits and vegetables many times in a day.

A dietitian will instruct you how to measure food portions and how to be a careful reader of food labels, so that you can pay great attention to serving size and carbohydrate content. If you taking insulin, then also he or she can teach you how to count the amount of carbohydrates in each meal or snack so that you can adjust your insulin dose based on that.

    Medications can’t alone help anyway to handle issues as diabetics. One would also need to chose along a good diet plan to better handle the situation.

He asked me to strictly follow a diet plan where I should consume more fibers and cut reduce heavy meals to short meals at small intervals.
